Marcello Sala

Marcello has 30 years’ experience in financial services, banking, private equity investing and M&A advisory within leading institutions at a global level.

Marcello is currently Director General Financial Institutions at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. Prior to his current role, he has been associated with Apis since 2016.

Before joining Apis, he was Executive Vice Chairman of the Intesa Sanpaolo Group Management Board from 2010 to 2016 and a Board member from 2007 to 2016; in this capacity he was mandated by the Management Board to manage and develop the international projects and relations of the Group. Within Intesa Sanpaolo Group, he was Vice Chairman of AlexBank (Egypt) and a member of the Board of Directors of Banca IMI and of IMI Fondi Chiusi SGR.

In 2008 he co-founded Banca ITB (now Mooney), a bank focused on innovative payment solutions for the Italian retail market. In 2017, as Executive Director, he managed the successful sale of Banca ITB.

From 2001 to 2006 he was Managing Director of the private equity fund, The Oak Fund.

From 2012 to 2018 Marcello was Chairman of The Foundation for Innovation in the Third Sector – FITS!, a non-profit organization focused on new models capable of reinforcing the sustainability of organisations by restoring efficiency and using financial tools to facilitate and strengthen links within private, public and social enterprise backers.

A member of the World Economic Forum New Champions Advisory Board, the Council for Inclusive Capitalism and of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance Fintech Committee, he has held various positions in international companies and institutions, including Chairman of the Italian Egyptian Business Council, member of the Trilateral Commission, member of the Global Agenda Council on Future of Financing and Capital of the World Economic Forum, member of the B20 Financing Growth Taskforce, member of the International Council of the Bretton Woods Committee, board member of ISPI (Italian Institute for International and Political Studies) and member of the Board of Directors of IAI (Institute for International Affairs).

Apis has named Marcello Partner Emeritus in recognition of his contributions to Apis over the years.
